Streptococcus Antibodies Profile

This profile screens for the two most common antibodies against streptococcus: DNase antibodies in serum (ADB) and antistreptolysin O titer (ASO). These antibodies may cross-react with brain tissue, causing abnormal behaviors. Both tests are performed to identify a previous infection of group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus (GABHS).

Patients That Benefit from This Test:

Group A β-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) infections can cause several immune-mediated diseases. Some of the specific conditions and patients that benefit from this test include:

  • Rheumatic Fever (RF): Primarily affects children and results in inflammatory disease of the heart, joints, and central nervous system.
  • Sydenham’s Chorea: Characterized by uncontrolled movements of the face, hands, and feet, often seen in rheumatic fever.
  • Motor Tics and Phonic Tics: Uncontrolled movements and sounds that resemble symptoms seen in Sydenham’s Chorea.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Episodes of OCD following GABHS infections, often related to PANDAS.
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Sudden onset of ADHD symptoms following a streptococcal infection.
  • PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections): Episodic symptoms of Tourette’s syndrome following streptococcal infections.
  • Heart Valve Damage: Due to cross-reactivity of antibodies formed against GABHS.
  • Inflamed Joints: As a result of immune response to GABHS.
  • Neurological Disorders: Resulting from cross-reactivity of antibodies with brain tissue.
  • Tourette’s Syndrome: Especially cases that follow streptococcal infections and display episodic symptoms.s.

By identifying antibodies that indicate a previous GABHS infection, this profile helps in diagnosing and managing these immune-mediated conditions, facilitating appropriate treatment and nutritional support to mitigate the effects of the antibodies.
